An Empire A Big Kingdom

What is An Empire?

An empire consists of several kingdoms or states that have been bought under the control of a single ruler. The stronger janapadas captured neighbouring states to form mahajanapadas or Kingdoms.The Magadha transformed itself into an empire that ruled over most of northern India.

  • An empire is a Sovereign state consisting of several territories and peoples subject to a single ruling authority, often an emperor.
  • States can be empires either by narrow definition through having an emperor and being named as such, or by broad definition as stated above in being an aggregated realm under the rule of a supreme authority.
  • The lions that we see on our currency notes and coins have a long history. They were carved in stone, and placed on top of a massive stone pillar at Sarnath.
  • Ashoka was one of the greatest rulers know to history and his instructions. The inscriptions were carved on pillars, as well as on rock surfaces.
  • At its zenith, Ashoka’s empire stretched from Afghanistan in the west to Bangladesh in the east. It covered almost the whole Indian subcontinent except present Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and modern-day Sri Lanka.
  • Ashoka built many edicts all over India including in present-day Nepal and Pakistan.
  • His capital was at Pataliputra (Patna) and had provincial capitals at Taxila and Ujjain.
  • The empire that Ashoka ruled was founded by his grandfather, Chandragupta Maurya, more than 2300 years ago.
  • Chandragupta was supported by a wise man named Chanakya or Kautilya. Many of Chanakya’s ideas were written down in a book called the Arthashastra. There were several cities in the empire.
  • These include the capital Pataliputra, Taxila, and Ujjain. Taxila was a gateway to the northwest, including central Asia, while Ujjain lay on the route from north to south India. Merchants, officials and crafts persons probably lived in these cities.
